Best Answer

The three ships Godspeed, Susan Constant, and Discovery made landfall 26 April 1607. The day before, Captain Edward Maria Wingfield was elected colony president.

Although, largely by his own self-billing, Captain John Smith is credited with being the first, Smith did not serve as the leader of the colony until September 1608 and he was removed August 1609 and forced to return to England. His time of leadership is commonly referred to as the beginning of the Starving Time (which lasted until 1610). Only 68 if the 500 original colonists survived.
