You may be referring to Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. There were a number of jazz performers during the 1920s, but the majority were instrumentalists-- that is, they played Trumpet or piano or they led their own orchestra, but they did not sing. Louis Armstrong was one of the few who did both-- playing his instrument and singing.
