Paul Revere shouted "The Regulars are coming" in 1775 when he was on horseback galloping through the streets to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams when the battle of Lexington and Concord were occurring when the British soldiers were coming to attack.

Paul Reverse rode along with William Dawes and Samuel Prescott. He did not say "The British are coming" since they were all British subjects. He was heard to say "The regulars are coming out" pertaining to the Kings' army. Please note that Paul Revere's ride was not particularly noted until poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote "Paul Revere's Ride" in 1861.

They all had a "midnight ride" to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the British were coming to arrest them. They were all sent on the same mission but on different routes. They were all captured

While on his way to warn Lexington and Concord of the British troops that were on their way to both seize patriot munition stores and arrest John Hancock and Samuel Adams, Revere was stopped by British Officers and held for the night. The next morning, he talked them into letting him go.
