This was a tin foil phonograph. The phonograph played cylinders and not disks which led to his discovery that he could playback messages via this invention.
About l877. the earliest Edison phonographs were the cylinder type. Disc recordings (hence the term Disk Jockey) were invented by Emil Berliner much later and he sold the patents to Columbia Records. We still have both Columbia records and CBS. Mr. Berliner was a US citizen who also developed the Microphone and related devices for recording purposes.
The exact origins of the triangle instrument are unknown, but a number of paintings from the Middle Ages depict the instrument being played by angels, which has led to the belief that it played some part in church services at that time. Other paintings show it being used in folk bands. The triangle started appearing in marching bands as early as the 1700s.
