Dubh means black in the language of the Scots and Irish. There was supposedly a King of Scotland - Kenneth Dubh that some say was of dark complexion. Others say there were many warriors from North Africa that were in Scotland that were in alliance with the highlanders ( Moors or Blackamoor) The story of Othello could be included in this. We may never know if Dubh meant dark as in North African or came from another source. For example the surname Black comes from Blacksmith as does the the surname Smith. In the United States there is a tendency of people with dark complexions from either Latin America or African decent to claim they are Black Scots or Black Irish in order to explain their complexion and deny their true heritage. If Kenneth Dubh is of African decent then it is ironic that these Americans are also claiming African decent. DNA studies in Ireland show links between Spain and France (Basques and Bretons)."The Longue Duree of Genetic Ancestry: Multiple Genetic Marker Systems and Celtic Origins on the Atlantic Facade of Europe, Oct 2004" A Harvard University Study of the Irish (10,000 males) also showed they were almost universally pale skinned where their skin was unexposed to the elements.
The "Black Scots" are a community of people of African or Caribbean descent who live in Scotland. They have a rich cultural heritage that contributes to the diversity of Scottish society.
Mary Stuart, also known as Mary, Queen of Scots, was a devout Catholic. She faced conflict and controversy due to her religion, which ultimately played a role in her tragic downfall.
The Scots-Irish were mainly Presbyterian and belonged to various Presbyterian denominations, such as the Church of Scotland. They placed a strong emphasis on individual piety, a personal relationship with God, and adherence to strict moral and ethical standards. Their religious beliefs played a significant role in shaping their cultural identity and community values.
Benedictine monks were called black monks because of the color of their traditional black robes or habits. The term "black monks" was used to distinguish them from the Cistercian monks, who wore white robes and were known as the "white monks."
There is no historical evidence to suggest that Saint Patrick was a black man. Saint Patrick was a Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop who is recognized as the patron saint of Ireland.
Vicars traditionally wear black as a symbol of humility and simplicity. The color black is seen as a form of reverence and a way for clerics to demonstrate their commitment to their faith and service to the community.
