Poseidon is probably Athena's greatest enemy because Zeus had promised Poseidon the city which is now Athens, but when Athena was born, Zeus told her that she could be the patron of it. Athena and Poseidon had a contest where they would each give the city a gift, and the people would decide which one they liked best. Athena planted an olive tree, and Poseidon made a saltwater spring. The people liked the olives, so they chose Athena. That's why the city is called Athens. Arachne was another one of Athena's enemies because she bragged that she could weave better than Athena, so she challenged Arachne to a contest, which Athena won. Athena then changed Arachne into a spider, which is why it is an arachnid. Another one of her enemies is Medusa. Medusa was one of Poseidon's many girlfriends. She was found 'sleeping with' Poseidon in Athena's temple. Athena got so mad (wouldn't you if you found your enemy sleeping with someone else in your sacred place?) that she changed Medusa into a gorgon with serpents as hair, and a gaze that changed any mortal to stone.
