This is because Dill and Jem go away on some kind of boys day out. Scout wants to go along with them, because she is more of a tom-boy then a lady, but Jem tells Scout that she cannot because they will be swimming naked in the water. So Scout has to stay behind with Aunt Alexandra and has to attend the Missonary Soceity Tea, and wear a dress. She's very particular about generating a superiority about the Finch name, and wants very badly to maintain the family's dignity as dictated by societal standards.
