The Rutles was a parody of The Beatles; it started as a sketch on the BBC-TV series Rutland Weekend Television, written by Eric Idle. Later, Idle and Neil Innes joined forces and wrote a series called The Rutles. Skits were shown several times on Saturday Night Live and producer Lorne Michaels suggested that they expand the concept into a feature film. In 1978, they came out with the film, The Rutles: All You Need is Cash, which had the tagline, "The musical legend which will last a lunchtime."
The members of the musical group were Ron Nasty (John Lennon), played by Neil Innes; Dirk McQuickly (Paul McCartneypaul McCartney" class='external' title="paulMcCartney), played by Eric Idle; Stig O'Hara (George Harrison), played by Ricky Fataar; and Barry Wom (Ringo Starr), played by John Halsey. Only Eric Idle did not play his own instrument or sing his own music. Ollie Halsall sang for Idle.
A later movie, The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch, wasn't released for over a year, and the DVD has never been released in the UK.Eric idle" class='external' title="Ericidle
In 2001 Neil Innes organised The Rutles Unrugged concerts for which Steve Simpson played Guitar, Fiddle and sang a bit.
What I heard is that John Lennon heard Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and wanted to be a rocker himself. In the movie "Nowhere Boy" which is a biopic of John's early life (the teen years primarily), he went to the theater with his mother and watched an Elvis concert. I can't remember what song was in the movie, but it wasn't "Heartbreak Hotel". The movie wasn't too accurate anyway.
