Yes, children often panned for gold in the creekbeds, or fossicked for alluvial gold in the tailings from mines or mullock heaps left behind. However, children were not permitted to register a claim. It is possible that, on occasion, they would go down into the shafts with their fathers.
Gold digger would be an inappropriate clothing for children. But that would also depend what age they are. But either way I would personally not recommend it.
