Your first two crew are the cook and cabin boy from Fort Ridley. The other skilled crew must be hired by paying a one-time fee. They are expensive early in the game, but relatively cheap at later levels.

Cargo Master (at Willard's Warehouse, Bouffant Bay) - increases cargo space (salary 15,000 doubloons)
Navigator (at Petey's Pub, Parrot Port) - increases ship speed (salary 12,000 doubloons)
Cannoneer (at Cannonry, Pirate Outpost) - increases fire rate of cannon (salary 20,000 doubloons)

You sell the resource that is worth the most at one trading post and also buy the cheapest, then continue doing that in a clockwise circle. If you have all the crew members and a good ship, you can attack pirates and sea creatures.
In Skullduggery Island, if you have a certain ship and are on a certain island, you can stand on the dock below a crew member and he or she might appear to be standing on your head or shoulders.
The person you can hire on Bouffant bay is inside the warehouse. He will cost you about 15,000 doubloons.
You should buy the NAVIGATOR (12,000 doubloons) in Parrot Port. She increases the speed of your vessel.
