During the time of the Commonwealth period in the Philippines (1935-1946), most Filipinos were engaged in agriculture, working on plantations or tending to small farms. Fishing and trading were also common livelihoods, especially in coastal areas. Industrialization was starting to develop, leading to some job opportunities in urban centers.

The very first Filipino to have opposed the Spaniards was Datu Lapu-Lapu of Mactan Island. Other heroes were Padre Gomez, Padre Burgos and Padre Zamora. Their death had an impact on Jose Rizal who was very young at the time of their execution.

Japan occupied Philippines for three years during WW II. During this occupation period Japanese atrocities against Filipino population was unprecedented, specially against Filipino women. A large number of women and even young girls were forced into sexual slavery and were labeled as ' Comfort Women'. Their job was to serve as objects of sex for occupying forces, with little or no remuneration and rights.

The father of Filipino printing is Tomas Pinpin, known as the "Prince of Filipino Printers." He was a writer, printer, and publisher during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. His works helped in the development and promotion of printing in the country.
