As far as we know there has always been some form of "Dope" in society such as alchohol, wine was the first of such. The egyptians knew of opiates and there civilization dates back at least 4000 years these common drugs were known to kill pain but they were also known to create a euphoric state. In the Americas whether it was the north or south part of the continent used other types of "Dope" but not always for their medicinal perpose, they were used to create a dream world experience for a man or a womans coming of age. The Incas and the Myans used coca leaves. The Native Americans used Peyotee, San Pedro Cactus, Psylisybin Mushrooms as well. So you see "Dope" has been a part of society as long as we have been a part of society.
