Barack Obama had a number of influences that molded and shaped the person he became. He has spoken of the role of his mother, his maternal grandparents, his wife, and several of his professors. But he was also molded by someone who was not there-- his biological father, who left when Barack was only two and had virtually no contact with him throughout his life. President Obama has said this had a profound effect on him, making him more determined to be a good husband and father, as he felt his own dad had never been.
President Obama has said that his mother and his maternal grandmother were two very important influences in his life. He also said that Pastor Jeremiah Wright (later controversial, but at the time, a well-known Christian minister in Chicago) was important because Rev. Wright renewed his interest in Christianity. And he has said his wife Michelle and two daughters are very important to him.

Theodore was close to his mother, as when she died it was sad. His children were also important. What molded his career is his interest in politics. :)
