If you eventually finish you will see Rosalina at the end with a star, your 242nd star. You will go bak to Starship Mario and Rosalina will be there for as long as you don't erase your game. Rosalina is also the Cosmic Spirit tht helps u on hard galaxys =) Rosalina stays with the Super Mario Galaxy series.

If you mean at the beginning you must first catch the bunnies. If you mean the garden gate with the many different Galaxys you must collect enough stars to get the the main boss galaxy which i think is controlled by Bowser Jr.(Koopa Kid). The Galaxy looks like Bowser's Head too.
