There were a number of people who helped to end slavery in the United States. They were called "Abolitionists," and they included white people like journalist William Lloyd Garrison, author Harriet Beecher Stowe (she wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin," about the brutality of a slave's life) and black people like eloquent public speakers (And former slaves) Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. The abolitionists worked hard to win more people over, by speaking all over the country, writing about the horrors of slavery, and making more people aware of how badly slaves were treated.
Gradually, the Abolitionist movement grew, although in the deep south, there was great resistance to ending slavery. Undoubtedly the most important person who helped to stop slavery was President Abraham Lincoln. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and that led to the complete end of slavery by 1865.
Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr
