The priests who are ordained to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and give absolution in the Sacramento of Penance.

In England the most important people were the two Archbishops (of Canterbury and York). They normally held the highest rank, except when the Pope appointed a temporary "Papal Legate" who outranked them - he acted as a deputy for the Pope.

This happened in 1139 during the first English Civil War (also known as the Anarchy). The brother of King Stephen, Henry of Blois (bishop of Winchester) was appointed Papal Legate, which temporarily made him senior to the two archbishops, annoying them immensely.

Below the archbishops were the bishops, who had "seats" (cathedrae in Latin) at the many cathedrals around the country.
