Most were the Pharisees and Saduccees. These were religious officials who had taken God's Laws and added their own over generations so that the Law had become cumbersome and dogmatic. They also wielded great power and insisted on others' deference to them and their exemption from many of the laws which they imposed on others.
By exploiting the poor and the weak they grew in power, and questioned Jesus incessantly trying to trip him up so that he could then be charged with 'blasphemy'. However, Jesus treated their beliefs rightly with contempt, calling them hypocrites and vipers.
It was as a result of these two groups that Jesus was finally executed, and they believed then to have had the victory. However, after the resurrection of Jesus, these officials eventually went into obscurity and disappeared, whilst the Christian Cghurch is now 2 and a half billion strong worldwide.
If you are speaking of the time before Jesus stood trial before Pilate, when the religious leaders (Named the Sanhedrin) questioned him, this passage is in Matthew 26:57, Mark 14:53, Luke 22:54, and John 18:24.
They tried to trap him with their questions, like the women who committed adultery.
Satan. He did his best to try to temp and trip Jesus up, make Him stumble and sin against the Father, but he couldn't do it. Jesus was totally without sin.

They were the pharasees.
The religious leaders once asked Jesus by what power or authority he performed signs and miracles?
In the Bible, they accused Jesus of blasphemy.
Jesus told the man that his sins were forgiven. The religious leaders believed that Jesus did not have the right to forgive people of their sins. :)
They were the Religious leaders of the church
They tried to trick Jesus on a sabath.
The Pharisees which were Jewish religious leaders

Since Jesus is the son of God, He would be king of the Jews. Him being a king would make him a threat to King Ceaser, and the religious leaders feared that they would lose their positions.
They falsely charged Jesus of blasphemy. Mark 14:64
Jesus challenged the religious (perhaps they were pious, perhaps they weren't) leaders for three main reasons. 1) Jesus fundamentally disagreed with their interpretation of scripture. While the religious leaders focused on strict purity codes that separated them from outsiders, Jesus showed that the heart of scriptures is that people can be forgiven their past sins and must pursue new lives of selfless love towards God and others. (Matthew 5:16-48, 10:1-12; John 8:1-11) 2) Jesus cared for the common people, and he felt that their leaders were very poor leaders indeed. (e.g. Matthew 23) 3) The religious leaders did not believe in Jesus, and they were very jealous of his popularity. They therefore challenged him with difficult questions trying to trap him, and he replied by challenging them. (e.g. Mark 7; Matthew 22:15-46; John 8:12-59)
Jesus Christ is God/ Son of God. You can't get more religious then that. Jesus was born in Israel to the tribe of Judah and followed the true Law of Moses, but not any of the man made laws that the religious leaders had made up.
