According to "The Philosopher's Way" by John Chaffee, Descartes made that argument. So far my favorite philosopher is Kant, he seems very intelligent and I agree with his definition of self. Good luck with your future philosophy.
Self harm is ususally a method of emotional release, and a lot of the time an affect of a troubled childhood. It can be caused by extreme pressure and stress, anger/frustration, being a victim of bullying and much more. It is more common in young adults and teenagers, especially women. It can be seen as a way of survival also.
