Brian Clough was first eligible for the job in 1973 when Sir Alf Ramsey resigned. On that occasion, Don Revie got the job. Clough was still a potential candidate for the next 20 years, but never got chosen. Ron Greenwood, Bobby Robson and Graham Taylor all got the job instead of Clough.
