John Tyler was the first VP to assume the office of president due to the death of the president. He succeeded William Henry Harrison (9th US President) who died after only 1 month in office on April 4, 1841.

Tyler was at first considered to be only an acting President and was not allowed to move into the White House nor given any money for official functions. He disagreed, took the oath of office, and carried out the duties of the President. On June 1, 1841, both houses of Congress approved his status. But it was not until the 25th amendment in 1967 that a succeeding Vice President was declared President by law.

Tyler did not run for re-election as President in 1844.

The office became vacant because at the time there was no constitutional provision for the mid-term nomination or replacement of a Vice President. When Truman won the 1948 election, Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky was his running mate.
