One person who became famous was Crispus Attucks, a free black man (who seems to have been part black and part Wampanoag Indian); Attucks was the first person killed during the Boston Massacre in 1770. He was among a group of colonists protesting against the British soldiers; by some accounts, the protest turned violent as colonists began throwing objects at the soldiers; other accounts say Attucks was not one of the men who was throwing anything. But in either case, the soldiers opened fire, and Attucks was among those who were shot to death. Many colonists regarded him and the other victims as heroes, and their deaths inspired further protests.
