The Magna Carta led to the rule of constitutional law in England and elsewhere. It was the first document imposed on an English monarch by his subjects in order to limit the monarch's powers and protect the feudal barons' rights. It was signed and sealed by King John in 1215. Throughout history, it was both respected and ignored by various monarchs, but by the 17th century English Civil War, it became an important symbol to remind the monarch that they were bound by law and had limited powers.

It inspired the English Bill of Rights as well as the United States Constitution.
