The building at 263 Prinzengracht was burgled twice while the 8 were hiding in the annex. The first time was thoroughly professional - they did not know it had happened until the next morning, but the thieves took everything of value that was re-sellable on the black market. The second time - the time that terrified everyone and had them spending the entire night motionless waiting for the police to arrive - was actually perpetrated by a 10-year-old boy named Hans Wijnberg. He stole nothing, hurrying out of the bulding when he heard the toilet upstairs flush, but the sound of his clumsy break-in is what frightened those in the annex so badly.
