Best Answer

There were numerous explorers who came across Australian long before Cook. They included Willem Jansz (1606), Dirk Hartog (1616), Willem de Vlamingh (1696) and William Dampier (1688), among others.

Abel Tasman was the first European explorer to discover Tasmania, the island state of Australia. He discovered the island in 1642, almost 130 years before James Cook came anywhere near the Australian continent.
