The software coordinating multiple monitors between the GPU and the OS differs between ATI's driver (where its known as HydraVision) and Nvidia's, (called nView) and both sets of code dislike one another vehemently.... If neither your integrated ATI or discrete Nvidia graphics cards has two monitor outputs, you should exchange the Nvidia card for a comparable model with an ATI GPU. If one of your current GPU's has two monitor outputs, disable the other card, and implement the corresponding multi-monitor mode associated with that graphic driver. ☺
