William Still is often regarded as the primary influence of the Underground Railroad. He wrote a book on his participation called "The Underground Railroad".

However, it was a somewhat more spontaneous thing, as such things always form in such conditions. The Society of Friends were probably the key "makers" of the Underground Railroad.

Did the underground railroad exist before the civil war?

The Underground Railroad was a series of free blacks and Northerners who were against slavery that would guide slaves up to the North to Freedom. It wasn't an actual railroad, but at times it went underground to hide slaves. It was coined "Underground Railroad" so slave masters wouldn't know what it really was, and it was almost like a railroad. The main people who came directly to the slaves and guided them along the "Railroad" were coined "conductors". One very famous conductor is Harriet Tubman, also nicknamed "Black Moses".

How did the railroad affected people's lives?

The underground railroad helped free about 75,000 slaves. Most went to Canada, which as a British territory did not permit slavery and did not allow sending slaves back. It is unclear how many of the 75,000 eventually came back to the United States after slavery ended. If a person is descended from one of those 75,000, perhaps he owes his very existence to the Underground Railroad people.

Who built the underground railroad?

Harriet Tubman built the underground railroad for the slaves to take a path so the slaves could escape and their owners won't catch them or beat them. Its just like the song follow the drinking gourd and the slaves had to follow the north star and see the drinking gourds its really good if you travel at night because its easier and darker and the masters won't catch them.
