The modern concentration camp was actually created in the Boer War of

1899-1902. In an effort to restrain and subdue the Afrikaners from their

persistent guerrilla tactics, the British established tent camps to house the

families of the Boers whose farms were burned. Incompetence, the lack

of adequate health care and unsanitary conditions led to the death of no

less than 20,000 persons. It was not the intended outcome.

To the best of my knowledge, it was the Eastern Roman Empire in the 4th Century. The Visigoths appealed for safety from the Huns and were granted sanctuary inside Roman territory. However, they soon found themselves in concentration camps and more horribly oppressed by the Eastern Romans than by the Huns.

To properly understand Nazi thinking, one must read Hitler's "Mein Kamph" which clearly states that Germany cannot succeed at anything it sets out to do as long as there is a single Jew alive anywhere in the world! By this reasoning, the Nazis must make every effort possible to exterminate Jews, the Nazis building the concentration camps was only one part of this extermination plan. What always struck me odd after reading "Mein Kamph", was if Hitler and the other Nazi leaders really believed this, why didn't they put more effort into extermination even if it meant reducing military strength?

Anyway, the Nazis created them as part of their plan to exterminate Jews to save Germany. If that makes any sense.

Apparently Hitler proved his idea, because Germany lost WW2 due to the fact there were Jews alive in parts of the world he didn't control. Therefore Germany could not succeed in WW2.

It is generally accepted that the British, during the Boer War in South Africa, came up with the first use of the words "concentration camp". Where were Jews and other communities sent to during World War 2?

Extermination camps. Which were "brilliantly" disguised by the name concentration camps. The Nazi official that came up with that "smart" mask name for it was really stupid, saying that for concentration camps, they would concentrate the populations inside them into well organized groups. Then the secret of the camps came into play: They murdered the "groups." Oh, and they weren't really groups. They were just new arrivals or random prisoners.
