Roy G. Kabat. Roy worked with exotic and domestic animals for movies and television and had a small traveling circus. After retiring to the Applegate Valley in southern Oregon, he was contacted by the American Humane Association and their headquarters in Denver, Colorado. A deaf woman in Minnesota had had a dog that had trained itself to let her know when things were going on. As she lost more and more hearing, the dog alerted her to more and more things. After her dog died, the woman realized how much she had come to depend on the dog and began a search for someone to train a new dog for her. The American Humane Association began some experimental work trying to train dogs to help people who were deaf, and they wanted Roy's advice. After spending two weeks in Denver, Roy came back to Oregon and began Dogs for the Deaf.

Why do deaf dogs bark?

Deaf dogs, just like deaf humans, still have the use of their voice box and therefore will use it. When we speak, or when dogs bark, we 'hear' it internally (a bit like when you are thinking, you 'hear' your own voice in your head).

Which dogs make hearing for deaf dogs?

Do you mean for people who are deaf. Well if so then a lot of dogs are good for that. Most people use either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever because they are the smartest and most commonly used and pretty easy to train. However some people use other dogs or you can just sign up for a dog. There are lots of places that you can sign up on the waiting list for.

Are animals tone deaf?

No. Domestic dogs and cats, for instance, respond favorably to high, feminine voices. If they were tone deaf, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Birds demonstrate that they are definitely not tone deaf by their songs. Animals also have different sounds they use for different occasions, including high and low tones. omg that's sooo cool!
