Even though the exact cause was not clear, the United States blamed Spain. The sinking of the USS Marine on February 15, 1898 was a catalyst that sparked the Spanish-American war. One of the theories for the cause of the ship sinking, in addition to the theory that the Spanish sunk the ship as an act of war, was a fire in a coal bunker. Additionally, some conspiracy theorist claim that the US forced the ship into an underwater mine to give the US an excuse for declaring war on Spain. The true cause will most likely never be known for certain.
It was the Marines of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) flying from the USS Kearsarge in June of 1995.
