The codification of Roman Law is called The Code of Justinian. It is a series of books that organized the laws of Rome and explains how they are applied. Each judge applies the law according to the code and not according to previous court decisions as in the United States or England. Judges have more power and do not simply act as referees as in the United States in Jury trials. While the laws have been greatly modified over the years, as in the code of Napoleon, the parts that have not been modified, are still used.

What kind of legal system does France use?

French law is based in some respects on Roman law and is codified. That means that, unlike in the U.S. or England, precedent is relatively unimportant. It's the codified 'rule-book' that really counts. The *basis* of French law dates from the Napoleonic period and is often referred to as the "Code Napoleon" though some of it wasn't fully collated till 1816.

What is civil law?

As opposed to criminal law, "civil law" refers to that branch of law dealing with disputes between individuals and/or organizations. In another sense 'Civil Law' is a system of codified law based on ancient Roman Law known as the Code of Justinian. It is a written code of law that judges must follow. Civil Law codes are used in most countries in Europe and South America, and some parts of Africa and Asia. Those codes have been modified and modernized at various times. It is in contrast to Common Law systems.
