During the US Civil War, President Lincoln retained overall control of Union forces in his role as Commander in Chief. As Lincoln had to delegate his powers to the Union army's high command, he at times had a General in Chief reporting to him. The generals he had appointed in this role changed a few times, indicating military confusion or the failure to accomplish the goals of Lincoln.The following generals were at one time,holding the position of general in chief:

1. Winfield Scott;

2. George B. McClellan;

3. Henry W. Halleck; and

4. US Grant.
