The were actually two commanders of the South Pacific Area (which included Guadalcanal and operations related to the campaign for it). The first was Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley, who was appointed Commander South Pacific (COMSOPAC) in June 1942 and oversaw the initial phases of the battle for Guadalcanal. He was relieved in October 1942 by Vice Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey, Jr., who held the position until May 1944. Both men were subordinate to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet.

In command during the Guadalcanal Campaign (August 1942 - March 1943) was Vice Admiral Robert Ghormley, commander of the South Pacific Theater. In charge of the Allied Expeditionary Force for Operation Watchtower was Vice Admiral Frank Fletcher.

After several missteps in the Guadalcanal landings, Ghormley was replaced by Vice Admiral William "Bull" Halsey on October 18, 1942.
