The Mexican Indians, who were known as 'Aztecs', founded a great civilization whose capital, Tenochtitlan resided in the middle of the Texcoco Lake, around the territory where now stands Mexico City. In 1952 they were conquered by a party of Spanish explorers led by Hernan Cortés who took control of Tenochtitlan with the help of Tlaxcalan Indians, who held a grudge against the Aztecs.

In 1458 the Aztec army of 300,000 men was defeated by the Zapotec, Cholulan, Huexotzingo and Mixtec alliance under the ruler Atonal - if successful this would have meant the complete destruction of the Aztec empire before the arrival of the Spanish. The Aztecs sent another army and by means of a clever ruse defeated Atonal and had him garotted.

In 1519 the Spaniards began a campaign against the Aztecs, but it is only with the aid of the Tlaxcalans that the Spaniards overcame Aztec resistance. Without that aid the Spanish would certainly have failed.
