It was customary for Spanish conquistadors to settle on conquered cities. One such example is Mexico City, which was formerly known as Mexico-Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec empire.

Not at all. The first settlement where present-Mexico City resides was known as Mexico-Tenochtitlan, and was founded by the Aztec civilization. When Spanish conquistadors destroyed the Aztecs in 1521, they renamed the place as Mexico City.
