On 29 May 1453 the Ottoman Empire, under the command of Sultan Mehmed II, finally conquered Constantinople; this was the end of the Byzantine Empire.

The Byzantine Empire was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453 AD. They kept the name of the capital city 'Constantinople' for centuries, and only renamed it to Istanbul in 1930.

The Byzantine Empire was conquered in 1453. The empire could no longer defend itself against the conquering Ottoman Turks. They conquered Constantinople and changed its name to Instanbul.
