Saladin
The third crusade was also known as The Kings' Crusade, for the monarchs that participated directly in it: Richard Lionheart of England Philiip II of France and Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emporer These men led armies to the holy land to recapture it from Saladin, who controlled the Egyptians and the Syrians. Frederick Barbarossa died on the way, and was replaced by Leopold V of Austria.
The Third or Kings Crusade began in 1189. This was an attempt by Europeans to recapture Jerusalem from Saladin. Although some of the Holy Land was recaptured, the Third Crusade fell short of its goal and failed to recapture Jerusalem.
