The non-electric telegraph was invented by Claude Chappe in 1794. In 1809, a crude telegraph was invented in Bavaria by Samuel Soemmering. In 1828, the first telegraph in the USA. was invented by Harrison Dyar who sent electrical sparks through chemically treated paper tape to burn dots and dashes. In 1825, British inventor William Sturgeon (1783-1850) revealed an invention that laid the foundations for a large scale evolution in electronic communications: the electromagnet. n 1830, an American, Joseph Henry (1797-1878), demonstrated the potential of William Sturgeon's electromagnet for long distance communication by sending an electronic current over one mile of wire to activate an electromagnet which caused a bell to strike. In 1837, British physicists, William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone patented the Cooke and Wheatstone telegraph using the same principle of electromagnetism.
However, it was Samuel Morse (1791-1872) that successfully exploited the electromagnet and bettered Joseph Henry's invention. Morse made sketches of a "magnetized magnet" based on Henry's work. Morse invented a telegraph system that was a practical and commercial success.
Great Northern Telegraph Company was created in 1869.
The Barclay brothers puchased the Telegraph Group , which included the The Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and The spectator, from Hollinger in 2004.
In 1844, the first two cities to communicate through the telegraph were Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, sent this first message.
The telegraph system created by Samuel Morse had been vastly improved from its earlies days of 1838. The Union used the telegraph extensively to communicate from field armies to Washington DC for example. In fact, in one unsuccessful Union battle, the one at Fredericksburg , Virginia, President Lincoln stayed in touch with General Ambrose Burnside via telegraph. In this case, however, the "advanced" communications, allowed Lincoln to inform Burnside to assault entrenched Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. Despite the advice of Burnsides generals, he proceeded with the assault based on Lincoln's orders.
