Who created the pH scale?

He was the director of the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen from 1901 until his final illness in 1938. He published the pH scale paper in 1909. He never worked for a brewery and was not testing beer when he came up with his pH scale (both pervasive rumors).
