The first European to cross the Gibson Desert was John Forrest, who did so in 1874, rather than 1873. Peter Warburton was actually the first to the Western deserts generally, achieving this in 1873, but he crossed the Great Sandy Desert, to the north of the Gibson Desert. He was aiming to be the first to find a route from central Australia to Perth, but acrtually croseed through the Great Sandy Desert, arriving at Oakover River, 800km north of Perth. Ernest Giles was the first to try to cross any of the Western deserts, and it was he who actually named the Gibson, but he was disillusioned to find himself beaten by Forrest. Giles's first attempt to cross the Gibson was in 1873.
