Medusa was the mortal sister to the immortal monsters, the Gorgons. As the story is told, she was a priestess of Athena, but allowed herself to be seduced and ravaged by Poseidon inside the temple she served. Since Athena was a virgin, her priestesses were required to be chaste. Adding to that the fact that Poseidon and Athena has a long-standing feud, this was considered a great insult to Athena. Since she couldn't punish Poseidon, she turned her wrath to Medusa, changing the beautiful maiden into a creature that no one, not even a god, could look at without turning to stone. And while she was turned into a monster like her sisters, she was still mortal.
