The main Christmas celebration takes place on Christmas Eve, and it is a time for families to gather, exchange gifts, and enjoy a festive meal together. In some parts of Poland like Pomerania, Kuyavia and Greater Poland Gwiazdor brings gifts on Christmas Eve night. It is an equivalent of north German Weihnachtsmann. In other parts of Poland they are different names for Santa.

In most parts of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland Christmas presents are opened in the evening of December 24th ('Bescherung') and are brought by Christkind or Christchild (or alternatively by the Weihnachtsmann), who leaves the gifts but is never seen doing so. At midnight Germans taditionally visit Christmas Mass. December 25th and 26th are official holidays.

Generally, the gifts are from Santa Claus. However, there are some regional variations, e.g. in western parts of Poland it is sometimes believed it is Baby Jesus who gives the gifts.
