The cello (full name Violoncello), was invented in the early 16th century by Andrea Amati, a stringed-instrument maker. He invented it as there was a significant demand for lower tone instruments at the time. Today only six of his highly-ornamented cellos are known to exist, though the exact locations of three are unknown.
