Hitler committed suicide for several reasons. The foremost being that he was likely to be captured by Soviet forces advancing on Berlin, this would have meant a show trail, torture and a public execution which many of the Nazi top brass sought to avoid at all cost (i.e. Hermann Goering at Neuremburg). A capture by any nation would have been considered dishonourable but the Russians were especially savage in their treatment of German POWs out of some sense of revenge, despite the fact that Soviet forces were likely mere months from invading Germany in the early months of 41'/42'. Hitler also suffered from serious disillusionment about the course of the war and was actually convinced that the Russians could still be beaten even in the bunker with Germany in ruins around him. This is just one theory however and there is fairly compelling evidence that Hitler did not committ suicide and that he fled to South America along with many other Nazi leaders, there si considerable evidence including testimony from former Nazi officials as well as a claim by Stalin at Potsdam that he had escaped. There was in fact no bullet found nor was the blood type on the sofa Hitler's own, the suicide theory is put foreward by orthodox historians because examination of alternative but still credible theories opens the doors to too many more questions (i.e. Project Paperclip and the founding of the CIA).
