This story can be found in Numbers 13, Moses sent 1 man from each of the 12 tribes of Israel into Caanan. "from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

The men were tasked with finding out everything they could about the land that the Isrealites were meant to go into. Upon returning all of the men, except two, were afraid of what they had encountered. They said that the people were stronger than they were and that they would not be able to win against them. Caleb and Joshua were the only two who believe that they could win, the only two who had faith in God. As a result of the peoples unfaithfulness God decreed that none of them, except Caleb and Joshua, would live to see the promise land.
It was not Moses but Joshua who lead the people to Canaan.

The spies were in Canaan for 40 days:-Num 13:2, 25 WEB (v.2) "Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them." (v.25) They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
