Yes that was the custom; on Passover Day one prisoner would have to be released. Pilate wanted Jesus to be free, but the crowd wanted Barabbas free, and he was set free at the cost of Jesus.

Jesus was not trialed against anyone on Good Friday. After his trial, Pilate offered to free one prisoner, as was the custom at that time. The people were to choose between Jesus and Barabbas. They chose Barabbas.
Slaves in the north were treated more as indentured servants. They worked for a set number of years and then could choose to be set free.
