The gospels say that at the time of the Passover, it was a Jewish tradition to set one man free, although scholars have found no evidence of such a custom. Pontius Pilate asked the crowd to set Jesus or the murderer Barabbas free, and they chose to set Barabbas free.
Some scholars suggest that this was a play on words, and that there was no Barabbas. They point out that Abbas means 'Father' in Aramaic and therefore Barabbas means 'Son of the Father'. Jesus is known as the Son of the Father, so the allusion is that the Jews set the wrong Son of the Father free.
Ignore them. You are free to choose whom you like, and whom you don't. Such people are merely seeking to dominate you by forcing you into a conformity that they control.
That is the entire purpose of Creation. God has made this world (and the universe as its backdrop) as a stage upon which we are to choose whether or not to be religious, and whom we serve in that context. Without free will, we would be just another type of animal. Even angels do not have the free will that we do.
You can't. People have the free will to choose and will love whom they love, no matter what another person does. You can tell lies about the said person to make them seem less desirable.
What you should do is choose a religious group that strikes your fancy and see if you can't go with them. With Jews, the obvious answer is to go with Birthright for a free trip, but Christians and Muslims have their own unique organizations.
The people chose Barabbas, a criminal, to be set free instead of Jesus.
