Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothicus needed to build up his army but the law prevented him from drafting married men. He made it illegal to perform the marriage ceremony. A Catholic priest named Valentinus continued to perform marriages in secret until Claudius learned what he was doing. He was arrested and thrown into prison. While in prison he became a friend to his jailer and his young daughter who was blind. He cured her blindness and continued to counsel and teach her. Before he was to be executed he sent a note to the young girl, urging her to remain faithful to God and signed it 'from your Valentine." A short time later Valentine was tortured and beheaded.
