In J.R.R. Tolkien's works, particularly "The Lord of the Rings," the henchmen of Sauron are primarily referred to as "Orcs." These creatures serve Sauron and are often depicted as malevolent, brutish beings that carry out his orders. Additionally, there are other subordinate beings, such as the Nazgûl, who are also considered servants of Sauron but are more powerful and feared than the standard Orcs.

Sauron is a spirit, you could possibly call him an angel. He belongs to a race of beings called the Maiar, to whom the Wizards and the Balrogs are also a part. Maiar are lesser spirits that serve the greater Valar, themselves created by the creator himself, Eru Iluvatar to aid him in the world's creation. Though a lesser angel, Sauron (then known as Mairon) was an unusually gifted one. He served under the smith Vala, Aule, which is the source of his magic ring-making skill. One of the Valar, Melkor (later known as Morgoth) rebelled against the creator and drew some of the Maiar to his cause, Mairon included, becoming his lieutenant. When Morgoth was defeated, Mairon took up his mantle as the new Dark Lord.
