Ulysses S Grant did not run for a third term, although there was some sentiment in the Republican party for him to do so. His decision not to run was based on his own desire to maintain the two term limit that had been the tradition (but not the law) for the American Presidency since George Washington. Also affecting his decision were numerous scandals that occured in his administration concerning misallocation of government monies. Therefore the election of 1876 was between the Democrat Tilden and the Republican Rutherford B Hayes. Tilden received the majority of votes but Hayes won in the electoral college vote and became the 19th President of the United States

July 3rd - so the news was announced on the glorious Fourth. The Confederate Commander, John C. Pemberton, thought he might get better terms because of this. The Union commander, Ulysses Grant, pretended to offer him a concession, by paroling the Confederate troops, and this was accepted. Actually, Grant was dreading the prospect of feeding, clothing and transporting 30,000 prisoners all the way North. So - it was win-win!
Grant and Meade entered Petersburg in the morning of 3rd April 1865 at 9,00 AM. They were joined after a while by President Lincoln accompanied by the Admirals Porter and Farragut.
In the West, Ulysses S. Grant was beating the Confederates in battle after battle. Eventually, this resulted in a siege of Vicksburg, a major position on a bend of the Mississippi, and a huge economic staple for the South. On July 3rd, the very day that Pickett's charge failed at Gettysburg and the Confederates made ready to retreat back to Virginia, Grant secured an unconditional surrender from the Confederates at Vicksburg. His victory here weakened Confederates in the West beyond recovery, and Lincoln felt safe enough on that front to bring Grant over to the East and chase down Lee's army.
