The feudal system is a political system that was prevalent in Europe in between the eighth and fourteenth centuries. Most of the agricultural society was largely supported by the feudal system social hierarchy. In the feudal system, most of the rights and privileges were given to the Upper classes. Serfs are often described as unfree. More accurately, because that term is usually misunderstood, they might best be called peasants who were bound to the land they lived on but did not own. The problem with the term unfree, is that most people think it means slave, which it was not. Serfs did not have a right to move away from the land they lived on, but unlike slaves they could not be bought or sold, and unlike slaves, they had a right to live and work on the land. They owed the lord rent, usually in the form of labor or a part of the crop, but they had a right to expect the lord to protect them. There is a link to an article on serfs below.
The estate of most feudal lords was called a manor. The manor was a large agricultural property worked by peasants who lived on it, usually in a hamlet or village. It might have had a number of features, including a manor house, for the lord and his family, workshops, barns, woodland, pasture, fields, and often a church.
With the fall of Rome there was a period of chaos and death. The Celtic tribes raided villages and killed or enslaved people. This happened until a form of a feudal society took hold. At first, it was the strongest man in an area with the most men to fight and they took what they wanted when they wanted. These men would soon want to expand lands so they would raid and go after another strong hold. This kept up until the strongest was able to control vast areas and men. The feudal society brought order and stability to a brutal time.
